Physiotherapist

Herman Chauw

With over 30 years of experience in human movement, Herman brings together his background as a competitive athlete, coach, personal trainer, and physiotherapist to create a different approach to rehabilitation.

During his physiotherapy training in 2007, Herman found the profession highly structured, with many blanket rules around what should and should not be done. Coming from a background in gymnastics, where movement was limited only by creativity and possibility, he felt that this rigidity left little room to explore movement in the way he believed it could be.

After graduating, Herman returned to personal training, where he found greater freedom to explore movement. At the same time, he continued to value what physiotherapy had taught him. Over the years, he began combining his experiences as an athlete, coach, personal trainer, and physiotherapist to develop a broader understanding of how the body moves and adapts.

It was almost 20 years later, through his exposure to KJ Therapy’s approach and the work being done at its robotics centre, that Herman found his connection with physiotherapy again. He was particularly drawn to directional-bias Clinical Pilates, which brought together what he had always valued most: movement, creativity, and the ability to work with the individual rather than simply follow a set formula.

At the core of Herman’s practice is the belief that treatment is only one part of rehabilitation. The body needs to move, explore, and adapt. Through the right movement, individuals can gradually regain strength, confidence, and a sense of what their bodies are capable of.

For Herman, rehabilitation is not simply about treating the body. It is about giving the body the opportunity to move and, through movement, rediscover itself.
